Punjabi Five Mixed Dal

Comforting, healthy, delicious. This mixture of 5 dals with a spicy tadak makes such a homey dish that feels like a familiar warm hug. Made in the instapot for ease and best eaten on a cold day.

Recipe: makes 2 servings

Ingredients:

2 Tbsp Moong Dal

2 Tbsp Toovar Dal

2 Tbsp Urad Dal

2 Tbsp Channa Dal

2 Tbsp Masoor Dal

3/8 Tsp Salt + 5/8 Tsp Salt for cooked dal

1 Tbsp Oil

1/4 Tsp Cumin Seeds

1/2 Onion diced

1 small Tomato diced

2 Garlic cloves diced

1/8 inch piece Ginger diced

2 Thai green chili diced

2 Green Onions diced

1/4 Cup Cilantro chopped

1/4 Tsp Turmeric

3/8 Tsp Red Chili Powder

1/4 Tsp Garma Masala

1 1/3 Cup Water

1/2 Tsp Lemon Juice

Method:

1. Soak the 5 dals together in warm water for at least an hour.

2. In an instant pot put the soak dal with just enough water to cover the top about an inch. Turn on instant pot at high pressure for 6 minutes.

3. To a separate pot add oil and warm it, once the oil is warm add in the cumin seeds. Once the seeds turn brown add the onions. Then the garlic, ginger and green chilies.

4. After the onions are soft add in the tomatoes. Have the tomatoes cook down until some of the water from the tomatoes is burned off.

5. At this point add turmeric, green onions, cilantro and red chili powder.

6. When the instant pot is done cooking the dal, you will notice that all of the water has cooked off, so you will add in the 1 1/3 cup water (if you want thicker dal only add 1 cup of water).

7. Now that you have added the water, turn the instant pot on the stew function and add in the sautéed vegetables from the stove.

8. Finish with lemon juice and garma masala.

Enjoy!
